Stephen graduated from Harvard Law School and was admitted to the California bar in 2000. He worked as a plaintiff-side employment litigator for many years. Prior to law school, he graduated from the University of British Columbia with first-class honors (Philosophy) in 1997.

From 2007-2014, Stephen attended graduate school in Philosophy, earning his MA (Toronto) and PhD (Michigan). He then taught law and philosophy at UCLA and San Francisco State University for several years. Stephen then left teaching and returned to practicing law. In 2026, he joined Trust Law Partners, LLP.
